Pavlov’s People

He would love us—wired
or wireless, jumping
at every beep and blip.
Our leashes slung over our ears
or attached to our belts, we
salivate for connection, contact.

He would love us or
bury his face in his hands,
wonder why he’d bothered, why he’d
named the devil.
